New blog to watch

Via Doug Burns posting on ANSI syntax (which I hugely prefer despite the odd suspicion that the implementation isn't as robust as the old style) I came across Nomad8's Oracle Blog. I suspect I'll keep coming back to this one. Anyway good things about it.

  • The clear layout - I can't do GUI design nomad8 can.

  • The evidencing of assertions

  • It is another female member of the Oracle community - we need more

  • She appears to have a background (agile development) with which I strongly disagree; required reading therefore

Yes, we need more women in the "technical" areana. Not because of any "eye candy" factor but to add to the mix, to expand our thinking and keep us honest. Women are different than men. (different NOT inferior) I went to a high school that was all boys. (decades ago) In my 6th Form year (12 grade) we added girls to the mix. There was a great gnashing of teeth and moans of "this will destroy the school" went up. Well, decades have passed since that time and what was the outcome? Yes, there were the usual hiccups, but pretty minor ones at that. In the end the school "recovered" and it actually got even better. Why?
    1. The universe of female applicants to available spaces in private school is higher than that for male applicants. (more girls want to sit in the same seat for girls than boys want to sit in same seat for boys - boarding school, so you can't change your mix of seats as easily)
    2. Item #1 means you can be more selective about the girls you accept. (skim the cream as it were) In general this means you get some darn smart kick ass girls.
    3. Boys compete for girls attention and don't want to appear dumb or less smart. (Boys are competitive)
    4. Due to item #3 and Item #2 the boys work harder.
    5. Due to #2 these girls are less prone to acting dumb to appeal to boys. The ratio of girls to boys is heavily favored for the girls. (eg 1 girl for every 3 or 4 boys) So the girls don't have to bat their eye lashes and act dumb. The smart girls know that - let me be frank about this - being smart is pretty attractive to non-neanderthal males.

It was a win win all around.

When I worked for a large insurance company there were a fair number of Actuaries who were women. I don't know why, but I viewed it as a clear indication that there are plenty of intelligent women out there. To become an Actuary takes about 7 years of self study and very hard work. You have to pass a series of very difficult tests. To give you an idea, there are more people who pass the bar exam (exam to become a lawyer) in California EACH year than are Actuaries in North America.

So yes. Lets have more qualified women in the profession. (I don't want posers or people who are there because of some quota.)

Just can't agree that any site with a white background, title disappearing behind grpahic and illegible icon-writing is good GUI design.

But good content still rules. Whether a listing of how to exp/imp through a pipe is good content varies by user.

    Secret word ntkyng
